The worst Desert Locust infestation since 25 years was reported in Ethiopia in late 2019 and has continued to affect many communities to date, leading to livelihood loss and food insecurity. In the first quarter of the year alone, the infestation has affected over 1 million people in different parts of the country. Households in Meyu reported significant reduction in their food consumption due to reduced crop yields and pasture availability which has also led to reduced livestock body condition, reduced milk production and increasing mortality rate.

Meyu has also been facing multiple crises in the past three or more years, among others, high number of internally displaced persons/ returnees, below average Belg season production due to Desert Locust, poor rainfall performance, and increased food prices. The COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions have further exacerbated the food insecurity in the woreda. The compounded crises are also putting unprecedented pressure on women, including on their rights and their food security. Expected market disruptions, food shocks, pressure on land and water resources, and increases in malnutrition will be particularly difficult for women, who often eat least and last. Furthermore, women also remain at the highest risk of gender-based and domestic violence, and sexual exploitation.

To address immediate food needs of most vulnerable Desert Locust-affected households through gender-sensitive unconditional cash transfer.
