Since the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent escalation of hostilities, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has been catastrophic as a result of aerial bombardment, military ground offensives, and no electricity. Humanitarian organizations face major challenges in getting fuel and relief items into Gaza and reaching the affected population. Unprecedented levels of need exist across all humanitarian sectors while aid organisations face severe safety and security risks. The availability of safe water in Gaza (already below standards) has significantly decreased, with drinking water availability diminishing by 95%. In Gaza 75% of the population – 1.7 million people – are estimated to be internally displaced, 70% of whom are women and children.

Expected Results  

1. Critical basic sanitation and hygiene needs of conflict-affected women, girls, boys and men in Gaza are met. 
2. Urgent basic shelter and NFI needs of conflict-affected women, girls, boys and men in Gaza are met.
   

Main Activities  

• Conduct urgent rehabilitation and installation of emergency latrines 
• Establish community solid waste management schemes 
• Provide hygiene kits for use at collective centre level and establish and train maintenance teams in collective centres 
• Provide household hygiene kits to IDPs living in collective centres 
• Support and facilitate hygiene promotion awareness raising in collective centres 

• Conduct urgent rehabilitation and maintenance of ground water wells and desalination plants 
• Provide compact desalination units to collective centres 
• Maintain and install water carrier lines at community level and Rehabilitate water balance tanks/water reservoirs at community level 
• Provide water storage capacity for collective centres 
• Provide tents and essential shelter NFIs to households living in informal shelters 
• Provide NFI kits to IDP households living with host families 
• Support light repair/rehabilitation of houses with non-structural damage
