Still reeling from the impact of Cyclone Idai, Mozambique was struck by Category 4 tropical cyclone Kenneth which made landfall on April 25th on the Northern coast. It brought torrential rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges affecting 247,000, people in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces. Assessments indicate widespread damage to communication, transport and power infrastructure with thousands of houses partially or completely destroyed as well as health centers and schools across the two provinces. The impacted communities lack basic necessities such as food and shelter and many are relying on rainwater for consumption – often from unprotected wells. Many waterpoints in the affected areas have become contaminated, exposing communities to waterborne diseases. Latrines which functioned prior to the cyclone have been damaged and women are relying on using capulanas to create some basic screening for privacy.

Expected Results

ER 1: Targeted cyclone-affected highly vulnerable households have improved their access to WASH NFIs supporting their recovery from the disaster.

ER 2: Targeted cyclone-affected people have improved access to hygiene facilities and limit their exposure to waterborne diseases through appropriate knowledge of hygiene practices.

• Identification of highly vulnerable HH based on present vulnerability criteria
